My Country near Kiwirkurra
Dominic Martin Tjupurrula was born near Kiwirrkurra in the Great Sandy Desert which is Pintupi country. However he has been associated with the Warlayirti artists of Balgo since 1985 and his themes include Bandicoot and Emu Dreaming stories. Deaf and dumb since birth, Dominic is a respected Lawman and rainmaker.
This work was painted at Warlayirti Art, Balgo in 1990. Using a muted palette, Dominic represents the sand hills and permanent and ephemeral water to be found around the area of Kiwirkurra. As the area is also an important source for ochre used in ceremony, the painting is connected to the stories that Dominic as a lore man would have custodianship for.
This painting has been in the possession of the present and original owner who is in the medical profession, and while working in Balgo, purchased it from Warlyirti Arts in 1990. The work has been placed with Gecko Gallery for sale and is supported by the original documentation issued by the Warlyirti art centre at Balgo.
